Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is used to compute the spark ignition in a turbulent methane jet flowing into air. Full ignition sequences are calculated for a series of ignition locations using a one-step chemical scheme for methane combustion coupled with the thickened flame model. The spark ignition is modeled in the LES as an energy deposition term added to the energy equation. Flame kernel for...

A CFD-based numerical model has been developed for the determination of the volume concentration and number density of soot in a laminar diffusion flame of methane in air, under transient condition following ignition of the flame. The transience is studied from the point of ignition till the final steady state is reached. The burner is an axi-symmetric co-flowing one with the fuel issuing throu...

To safely mine coal, engineers must prevent gas combustion and explosions, as well as seek feasible and reasonable techniques to control for these types of incidents. This paper analyzes the causes and characteristics of methane combustion and explosions. Water mist is proposed to prevent and control methane combustion in an underground confined space. We constructed an experiment platform to i...

nowadays, utilization of blended fuel in internal combustion engine is one of main topics in vehicle industries. the synergy effect will be highlighted when the potential of each fuel is employed and the engine performance will improve consequently.  in this research, the laminar flame speed of methane (main component of reference fuel for natural gas) and isooctane (main component of reference...

We report three-dimensional index-of-refraction measurements in a methane-air slot diffusion flame and a methane-air slot subsonic jet using beam-deflection optical tomography. The horizontal and vertical spatial resolutions are 0.26 and 0.635 mm, respectively. The peak temperature is calculated from the index-of-refraction map for the flame and compared with thermocouple temperature measurements.

In this study, the effect of the levels of hydrogen addition to methane-air premixed flame in a micro-stepped reactor has been studied numerically. In addition, the effects of mixture velocity and walls’ thermal conductivity (Kw) on the flame’s location, temperature, and species distribution in a micro reactor were calculated using a 2D numerical laminar steady code. The results showed that an ...

Premixed methane-air mixture is introduced at the center of two parallel circular quartz plates separated by a millimeter scale distance (<or= 5mm). Two plates are heated with an external heater to create a positive temperature gradient condition along the flow direction. The combustion characteristics of lean methane-air mixtures are investigated at phi=0.67 and phi=0.85 in the laminar flow re...

The gaseous by-product from natural or industrial processes which contain a small concentration of combustible gases is called a low-grade fuel or low calorific value gases (LCVG). Identifying the best strategy for efficient burning of such gases, where there is a bulk production, becomes inevitable to improve the efficiency of a system and reduction of pollutants emission. LCVGs have calorific...
